Eligibility – The VA’s 3M Requirements

To qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit through the VetAssist Program, veterans or their surviving spouses must meet three key eligibility criteria: Military Service, Medical Condition, and Money Limitations—also known as the 3Ms.

  • Military Service
    • Served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period.
    • Received an honorable discharge.
  • Medical Condition
    • Must have a non-service-connected disability that requires assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, mobility, or personal care.
  • Money Limitations
    • A net worth (income & assets) of $155,000 or less (as of December 1, 2023).
    • Primary residence and vehicle are not counted as part of net worth.
    • Unreimbursed medical and long-term care expenses may reduce countable income, increasing eligibility.
